Has anyone thought of collecting individual silver rounds?

By collecting, I mean buying/trading for one each of the different kinds, not primarily for investment but just for the fun of collecting. There are so many on the market, and some are rarer than others. I haven't heard of anyone doing it. Sounds like it could be a unique hobby - and one that is not a money sink at the same time!

I kind of do that, in as much as I try to buy the cool new stuff I find and occasionally I'll even pay a little more for a piece I really like. However, I have given up on the notion of collecting them all, there appears to be infinite variety! If you could pick a general class of silver round you might have an easier time of it, like all the Englehard, Johnson Matthey, or national coins like the silver eagle, maple leaf, onza, panda, etc.

That's all that I have one oz rounds...... I am sure that I must have just about all that were ever made, including from China, Australia and so on.

I have never gone into them to check them out.

I really like the variety in the generic rounds. I have some 'replica' peace dollars that instead of saying "e Pluribus Unim" say ".999 fine silver" or whatever... pretty cool rounds.

I like variety.

I do that, My big thing is collecting rounds and bars from the 1974-1980 period as they might have been held by the Hunt Brothers.

Re: Has anyone thought of collecting individual silver rounds?

I have a bunch of art bars from 1973 minted by Mother Lode Mint and Madison Mint and a few other mints...

I try to get as many unique 1 oz rounds, 1 oz Bars and 10 oz Bars as I can...

Seems like the place I usually pick up my silver from has a couple a hundred of a different Generic round each time I go in (every other week)...

EX.
1st time I went in they had Buffalo/Indian Head Rounds
2nd time they had some that had the Miner on them
3rd time Tri-State Mint
4th time A-mark or something like that
5th time they had Sunshine Mint

I can't remember the rest

I've never seen them with the same rounds twice...

Which I think also means there several more people around here taking Silver and a lot more than I can pick up...

When I started getting Silver, I started out buying a lot of those ""Art Bars"" as I like to collect them, but after hanging around here I just can't pay the premiums on them that they usally draw...

I'll still get one every now and then, but not like I was...

While I really dig the Art Bars, I'm starting to really dig the Rounds....

I dunno why, but I just can't get into Junk Silver, even thought I know its the best or cheapest way to accumulate...

I like .999 rounds better... I want to get one of those chests that look like Pirate Chests and Fill it up so it looks like the Treasure they always find in Pirate Movies...

On a side note, are there Gold 1 oz generic rounds(not that I could afford them) Not AEs but plain generic Rounds?

You know, try making some piles of junk, and hefting em,run em through your fingers, you'll start to like em,you can feel the history, and heft, and they clink.Fistfuls of coins are pretty cool.
What amazes me is what America was,and what it is now.Big difference, and those coins illustrate it clearly.

I think I like the Mercury dimes best.

Anyone know of a 1 oz round that has collector value over and above PoS?

I've heard the WSM 10 oz bars with the twin tower skyline have a slight premium.

hmmm, Send me one of those big bags and I'll sift though it a few times and see if I can get the hang of it.. :) Or I guess even a small bag just a few 100 face value would work too...

I do like the clink of silver coins.... I was playing with some Mercs last night that I picked up a small baggy of for less than spot... I put them in 2x2s and put'em with the rest of mine to see how many in order I could get... I want one of each date/Mint... :yippee:

I have one of those Thick "Art Bar Collecters Guide" books that list most Art bars and has a handful of collectable rounds and even some that are a goofy octagon or weirded semi-rounded shape...

I agree. And I like looking at really old ones, even if they are thin and worn, and thinking somebody maybe spent it on a night out dancing to a big band or just any part of its possible history.

I ordered one super cheap 'any old junk we have' mixed rounds order from Apmex and got fascinated by the variety in it, though some were pretty beat up. It had a few of those knock off dollars, and some really odd things.

That 1916D, the 42/41 overdates, and 21's will kill ya. Even in ag/g cond. But I'm still plugging away myself collecting them all. :D

Hahaha - I thought about doing the exact same thing - try to fill a chest with silver and a few gold rounds (krugs are the cheapest way to go) and keep it locked in a secure or hidden place.

My Godfather had exactly that. But every kind of coin going,he was a very serious and knowledgable coin man.Fascinated the heck out of me as a kid.He financed a construction company with them as collateral.

Had a clock on the wall in his den too, said Ty's Coin Shop.Guess it actually was in a sense.

When I was kid (9 or 10 yrs.), my great aunt had bags of old silver coins she had from way back (she probably saved them during the 20's and 30's), many of them were pre 1900 circulated coins. I was so affected by running my hands through those bags that I ended up stealing a few of the old mercury dimes....felt like total shit later, but at the moment I had the fever...kind of like Bogart. She never really knew (and I never resolved it...too bad) but I'm sure she noticed me acting funny. Live and learn.

Re: Has anyone thought of collecting individual silver rounds?

I love collecting different generic one ounce rounds and bars. I buy what I can get my hands on if the price is right and I have the cash, but when I get the chance I enjoy looking through the dealer's stock and picking out ones that I don't have. I keep one of each different variety in a separate, sort of more accessible place because I often get the urge to get them out and look at them. Some of them are really interesting/attractive/strange.

I have a few times paid a little (not much) more for a really interesting round or bar just because I really liked the design. I wont go over board though, maybe just a buck or so more than I would pay for any other generic round. I have been trying to get my hands on a bar like the one pictured below, (it says one ounce .999 fine silver on the back) but they always go for way to much on ebay, sometimes 2 or 3 times spot. I am not willing to pay anything near that much, and my dealer hasn't had any in his stock that I have seen. I will find one eventually, ahhahahhaa.

I've seen them on e-bay for around 13-15.00...

Also, there is a guy in Florida that pretty much all he does is Art Bars and Silver Rounds and such... His website needs work, but he is at www.1refco.com he has like 50 websites selling Bars and stuff... Pretty good guy...

Re: Has anyone thought of collecting individual silver rounds?

Hey, collecting is F U N! And with Ag or Au forms a person is acquiring a store of real wealth. Collecting 1 oz. bars or rounds in my experiences is the best way to get kids into PMs trading FRNs for a commodity that doesn't break, get used up, or go out of style...and it helps them become a saver to boot. They just need to be discrete about it outside the family.

On a side note, are there Gold 1 oz generic rounds(not that I could afford them) Not AEs but plain generic Rounds?

Engelhard made some gold rounds some years ago. I've seen a 1 oz. and a few months ago I saw what I think was a 1/4 oz....tho it may have been 1/10 oz. Engelhard Au round. Haven't seen or heard of others...but the above post is correct - Krugerrands; I've seen the 1 oz. Rands at a couple bucks over spot and at spot itself. Fractional Rands are harder to find and more expensive.

Reminds me of a Kruger experience at a couple bucks over spot, and the coins were in awesome condition.
Said to him, thats a very good price, his reply...LOOK AT HIM! That Paul Kruger is ONE UGLY DUDE!:thumpdown

Says it all,huh?

My most unusual is a 5 oz silver Sunshine Minting round. Not that it is rare or anything, but it just cracks me up:haha::haha::haha:.Its like the worlds biggest quarter, looks preposterous for a coin,I LOVE it!

This is a very good thread, good one on getting kids interested. The wife just asked me to look for some nice unusual ones to give to the adult children as gifts,to get them interested for just the reasons stated here.
Think I will do just that.

Yeah, I just did a search on ebay. Their are a few, and they are up to about $14 each, average. Then you add in the $4 shipping most are charging. That is $18, high, but not insane.

But if you do a search for completed auctions in the advanced search area (you need an ebay account to do that) you will see that most have sold for between $20 and $30. Not including shipping. That is what happens to me with these bars, and why I don't have one in my collection yet. I have bid on probably 15 of them over the last year and a half. I always end up getting out bid in the last 10 minutes or so of the auction because I refuse to pay double spot (when you take shipping into consideration) for the bar, no matter how much I like it.
